जोगी सुर मुनि कहत पुकारी।
योग न हो बिन शक्ति तुम्हारी॥

निशिदिन ध्यान धरो शंकर को।
काहु काल नहिं सुमिरो तुमको॥
शक्ति रूप को मरम न पायो।

शरणागत हुई कीर्ति बखानी।
जय जय जय जगदम्ब भवानी॥
भई प्रसन्न आदि जगदम्बा।
दई शक्ति नहिं कीन विलम्बा॥

मोको मातु कष्ट अति घेरो।
तुम बिन कौन हरै दुःख मेरो॥
आशा तृष्णा निपट सतावे।
मोह मदादिक सब विनशावै॥

शत्रु नाश कीजै महारानी।
सुमिरौं इकचित तुम्हें भवानी॥
करो कृपा हे मातु दयाला।

जब लगि जियउं दया फल पाऊं।

Best Time To Recite Shri Durga Chalisa

History of Origin of Durga Chalisa

There is an interesting story behind the creation of Durga Chalisa. It is said that a long time ago there was an arrogant Brahmin. That Brahmin always insulted Mother Durga. One day Mother Durga came to him in the form of a girl and asked the Brahmin to recite Durga Chalisa. The Brahmin became angry after hearing this, but still recited Durga Chalisa. Mother Durga protected that Brahmin despite his wrong pronunciation. That Brahmin realized his mistake and apologized to the mother.

Some selected couplets/chaupai of Durga Chalisa and their meaning

  • Doha:  Namo Namo Durga happiness. Namo Namo Ambe Dukh Harni.

Meaning: Mother Durga is the one who gives happiness and removes sorrow. I bow at the feet of Mother Durga.

  • Chaupai:  Mother, I am Charanan’s maid. Look, I am not going to be born anymore, Nasi.

Meaning: Oh mother! I am your maid. Mother, please keep your kind eyes on me, so that I never fall.

  • Durga Saptashati:  This Sanskrit text symbolizes the power of Mother Durga and the various forms of the Goddess.
  • Durga Kavach:  This is a powerful mantra, by chanting which one gets the protection of Goddess Durga.
  • Devi Mahatmya:  This is a part of the Markandeya Purana of Hindu religion in which the story of the origin of Goddess Durga and the killing of Mahishasura is described.

Nine forms of Maa Durga:

Nine forms of Goddess Durga are worshiped during the nine days of Navratri, each form reflecting her specific power and importance.

1. Shailputri:
Being the daughter of the Himalayan mountain king, her name is Shailputri. He is worshiped on the first day of Navratri.

2. Brahmacharini:
Brahma means rigorous penance. The Goddess had performed rigorous penance to get Lord Shiva as her husband, hence this form of Mother has been called Brahmacharini.

3. Chandraghanta:
In this form of the goddess, she has a moon shaped tilak on her forehead, hence this form of her is called Chandraghanta.

4. Kushmanda:
It is believed that the universe originated from the womb of Mother Kushmanda. They are worshiped on the fourth day of Navratri.

5. Skandamata:
Skanda (Kartikeya) is the son of Goddess Durga. In this form, Mother Durga is holding her son Skanda in her lap.

6. Katyayani:
Sage Katyayan had performed rigorous penance for Mother Durga, as a result of which Mother gave birth to him in the form of a daughter. Therefore this form of Mother has been called Katyayani.

7. Kaalratri:
This form of Maa Durga is extremely terrifying. In this form, Mother Durga kills the demons.

8. Mahagauri:
This form of Maa Durga is very calm and beautiful. In this form, Mother Durga wears white clothes.

9. Siddhidatri:
This form of Maa Durga gives all types of achievements. They are worshiped on the ninth day of Navratri.

Worshiping the nine forms of Maa Durga provides various benefits to the devotees, such as:
